O.M.G. Group (Overcoming Mom Guilt)

Being a mom is hard. As moms, we neglect parts of ourselves that aren’t directly related to taking care of our children. When we do focus on those parts, we label ourselves, and others label us, “bad moms,” leading to tremendous guilt and self-blame.

The Mothercentered™ approach that we utilize in this workshop goes beyond self-care to a deeper healing of the internal rift between our “good mom” and “bad mom” parts, thus healing our mom guilt.

Our Overcoming Mom Guilt Group is a chance for you to connect with your inner needs and develop self-compassion. It’s an opportunity to create insight into the trigger points that motherhood evokes and cultivate the internal resources you have at your disposal.

In our one-hour workshop, we guide you through the process of visualizing and exploring different parts of yourself to build insight and self- compassion on your motherhood journey.

Our group is based on the Mothercentered Approach™ developed by Jessica Tomich Sorci, LMFT, PMH-C and Rebecca Geshuri, LMFT, PMH-C. The Mothercentered approach uses Internal Family Systems (IFS) to understand and heal the inevitable internal conflict that motherhood creates, between our devotion to our children and our own unmet needs. Internal Family Systems is a therapeutic approach which recognizes that we all have internal parts; different aspects of self that have individual feelings, desires, and goals. We have angry parts, sad parts, anxious parts; parts that hold it all together and parts that just want to let it all go. We have mom parts that will do anything to care for our children, and we have parts that say “What about me?, What about what I need?” It is the conflict between these parts that leads to mom guilt, and healing this conflict is what can bring about relief. All your parts are welcome here, and we truly believe there are no bad parts.

How It Works

During this hour-long workshop, a licensed psychotherapist and trained maternal mental health provider will guide you through a five-step guided visualization process, which is something like a guided meditation. During this process you will reflect on a difficult mothering moment and use that as a springboard to identify various parts of yourself, gain insight into underlying emotions, cultivate inner resources and increase self-compassion and self-acceptance. After the visualization, there will be an opportunity to share your experience with the group if you choose to do so.
